Very Rare Vintage 2021 image
Midleton Very Rare Vintage 2021
Chosen from the most exceptional quality single pot still and single grain Irish whiskeys laid down over the past four decades in Midleton, Co Cork, Midleton Very Rare 2021 is aged from 13 to 35 years in lightly charred ex-bourbon American oak barrels. Kevin O'Gorman selected a high pot still inclusion at 83%, as well as a notable contribution from third fill casks. The result is a luxurious and balanced whiskey with rich pot still connotations, where the distillate takes centre stage thanks to the use of refilled casks- a fitting legacy for one of Irish whiskey's great Master Distillers.

Tasting Notes
Nose: A delicate introduction of Sweet Mandarin Orange Citrus with Green Banana and Vanilla. The light Herbal notes develop until the typical Pot Still Spices, including Cardamom, Nutmeg and Peppers, show the signature Midleton style. Whilst a touch of Cedarwood and Charred American Oak add to the complexity.
Palate: The smooth initial mouthcoating is initially sweet with Vanilla and red Apple, before the more robust spices, Cinnamon and Clove with a slice of Root Ginger, show their presence. There is a polished Antique Wood contribution from the Barrels alongside some light Tannins and Charred Oak.
Finish: The finish is extra long as the spices subside giving way to Green Fruit and Stalks of Barley.
Midleton Very Rare Vintage 2020
The whiskeys used for Midleton Very Rare 2020 were selected by master distiller Brian Nation in his final days in that role. Whiskeys that were aged from 13-35 years were included in the blend and lightly charred ex-bourbon American oak were used for maturation. As always, single pot still and single grain whiskeys were chosen, but this year has a higher percentage of single pot still compared to previous vintages. Additionally, there was an increase use of refill barrels. Available in Ireland as of October 2020 with the UK, US, Australia, Germany, Canada, and Global Travel Retail to follow in the coming months.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Initial top notes of cane sugar and vanilla intertwined with pepper and nutmeg spices, complimented by sweet orchard fruits and white chocolate fudge all layered over polished antique wood notes, showcasing an intriguing balance between spirit and wood thanks to the complex interaction from the many years spent in supreme quality oak casks.
Palate: Initial burst of tangy fruit sweetness of orange peel and sweet pear creating a succulent texture while the pot still spices build overtime adding a mild prickle of chili oil. The presence of the charred oak remains constant in the background adding balance to the fruits and spices.
Finish: Satisfyingly long finish with the fruits slowly fading, allowing the oak and spices to linger until the very end.
